Astronomical Dawn is the moment the very first light of day becomes visible, signaling the end of night before the day has begun. Part poetry collection and part hybrid memoir, this multimedia work moves through seven astronomical stages of light and darkness, incorporating poems and photos from ages 7 through 22 to explore the lifelong journey of healing after loss and discover what it means to face the light of morning.
When morning comes
I used to say
I know that I
won’t look away
but I might freeze
in place, in fear
watching the world
become more clear
So when dawn broke
a brand new day
I did not think
I’d live to say
that dawn is fair
and warm, and bright
and birds, my friends
announce the light
So I sat still
for once, to breathe
and give my heart
the space to grieve
a time in which
I could not know
it is not just
sunsets that glow
